Bethel Awarded $24,890 Grant from NetVUE for Faculty/Staff Development

Bethel University has been awarded a professional development grant through NetVUE (Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education), a program run by the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC). This $24,890 grant will go toward faculty and staff professional development, providing opportunities for collaboration, resources and trainings, extended faculty retreat and more.

This is a one-year grant that will run from July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026.

“The ultimate goal of this grant is to assist Bethel faculty and staff with developing shared language in integrating vocational discernment into student services like advising, mentoring, first year experience (FYE), and even course content and design,” says Abson Joseph, Ph.D., Vice President for Academic Services.

Bethel recently made a change in elective requirements, now allowing undergraduate students to take up to 35 elective hours as part of their degree. This was done to allow more room for flexibility and customization in the hopes that students will better be able to explore and prepare for the specific calling on their life.

“At Bethel we believe that every degree program and subsequent job leads to a way to serve the Kingdom. This grant provides an opportunity to cohesively prepare all faculty and staff to engage in conversations around this idea of vocation, furthering Bethel’s mission to equip the whole person for lifelong service,” Joseph says.

Bethel Becomes First Undergraduate University in the Nation to Offer Certified Academic Language Practitioner (CALP) Certification for Graduates

Bethel Becomes First Undergraduate University in the Nation to Offer Certified Academic Language Practitioner (CALP) Certification for Graduates

The Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Bethel University, making it the first undergraduate institution in the nation to offer Certified Academic Language Practitioner (CALP) certification for bachelor of arts in education graduates.

CALP is a nationally recognized professional certification for dyslexia and related disorders and has historically been reserved for individuals who already have earned a bachelor’s degree and are pursuing coursework at the graduate level.

Due to recent program changes within Bethel’s education department and its partnership with B.E.A.R. Reading Center in South Bend, Bethel has been approved as a provider for the required Comprehensive Practitioner-Level Training. This allows completers to be able to sit for the ALTA Competency Exam – Practitioner Level immediately after earning their bachelor’s degree.

“As the first initiative for our newly developed BU Center for Literacy, we ensured our curriculum was fully aligned with the science of reading,” says Michelle Fish, Ph.D., director, Center for Literacy and associate professor of education. “However, our desire was to make changes that would not just meet minimum state requirements but would be the gold standard for teacher preparedness in the field of reading science.”

Bethel’s program changes included moving from a two-course, six-credit reading sequence (the state minimum) to a 16-credit literacy cognate, including an additional 60-hour clinical literacy practicum.

Kim Haughee, M.A.E., CALP, I-CALP, CALT, who serves as B.E.A.R. Reading Center Director in South Bend and ALTA Great Lakes Chapter President, was instrumental in the partnership. She is I-CALP certified and will serve as the teacher of record for the program.

“While working toward a bachelor’s degree at Bethel University, pre-service educators will be taught the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully implement Science of Reading (SoR) strategies within classrooms. Their students will have the advantage of being immersed in an instructional environment leading to proficient reading and writing outcomes,” Haughee says.

In addition to the added benefit of earning a national professional certification, Bethel’s teacher candidates will graduate with the necessary tools to provide additional dyslexia intervention to their future students from their first day of teaching.

“We are thrilled to be leading the charge for the Science of Reading and improved teacher training, not only in our region but also nationwide. We know that when teachers embrace the Science of Reading, students will develop a strong foundation for reading success. Our teacher training program equips teachers with the essential skills to bridge the gap between research and the classroom, promoting evidence-based methods for reading instruction and leading to improved literacy outcomes for all students,” says Jim Bennett, Ed.D., program director and department chair for education.

McDonald Begins as Bethel University’s Ninth President

Bethel University’s ninth president, Dee McDonald, Ph.D., begins his tenure today, July 1, 2025. He succeeds Barbara K. Bellefeuille, Ed.D., who announced her retirement in December 2024. McDonald was unanimously confirmed by the Bethel University Board of Trustees and General Oversight Council of the Missionary Church, Bethel’s denominational affiliation, and is enthusiastic about advancing the mission and reach of Bethel University.

“My prayer is to see Bethel increase its passion for impacting the Kingdom of God and transform into something only God, through His almighty, ever-present hand, could do! My dream for Bethel is big, but we serve an even bigger God who can do much more than we can ask or imagine,” he says.

McDonald has 19 years of experience in Christian higher education and enrollment and marketing leadership, most recently as Vice President for Enrollment and Marketing at Crown College in St. Bonifacius, Minn. (2022-2025). He has a history of strong enrollment growth at the four CCCU (Council for Christian Colleges & Universities) institutions he’s served. His other previous roles have included Executive Director of Graduate & Adult Enrollment at Southeastern University (SEU), Lakeland, Fla. (2017-2022); Chief Enrollment Officer at North Central University, Minneapolis, Minn. (2016-2017); he also served for ten years in a variety of enrollment-related positions at his alma mater, Olivet Nazarene University, Bourbonnais, Ill. (2006-2016).

In addition to his administrative roles, McDonald has also served as an adjunct graduate professor at Crown College, on the Board of Directors for NACCAP (North American Coalition for Christian Admissions Professionals) and as pastor for JOY Church of the Nazarene, a church plant in Waconia, Minn., where he was a licensed minister on an ordination track.

He earned a Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership from Southeastern University (Lakeland, Fla.), studying the relationship between authentic leadership, authentic followership and organizational commitment within Christian higher education; an MBA from Olivet Nazarene University (Bourbonnais, Ill.); and a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Science Education, also from Olivet.

Growing up in LaPorte, Ind., McDonald learned about Bethel through Bible quizzing with his local Missionary Church. He is married to his high school sweetheart, Amanda McDonald, MSW, MSK, who most recently served at Crown College as Director of Student Success and Men’s and Women’s Head Tennis Coach. Together they have two children, Ell and Maelee, and look forward to investing in the Bethel community.

“Bethel has always felt special to me — the mission, the people, the location, everything. There’s a reputation for being who you say you are, a humble disposition and hard-working culture. These elements give me an added appreciation for this special place called Bethel,” McDonald says.

In his career, he has served as a resident director (Appalachian State, Baylor University), Director of Residence Life (University of Virginia’s College at Wise), Head Coach of Men’s and Women’s Cross Country and Track & Field (Montreat College, Hannibal-LaGrange University, Eastern Mennonite University) and Senior Associate Director of Athletics (Montreat College). Most recently he has been serving as the Director of Philanthropy at Givens Communities in Asheville, N.C., since July 2024.

“I am thrilled to welcome Jason Lewkowicz as Bethel University’s new Athletic Director,” says Shawn Holtgren, Ph.D., vice president for spiritual life and university relations. “His wealth of experience and a deep commitment to nurturing student-athletes both on and off the field aligns perfectly with our mission. Jason will continue to champion a steadfast focus on keeping Christ at the center of our athletic programs, fostering a culture of excellence, integrity and faith.”

At Montreat College, Lewkowicz served a key role in helping oversee the athletic department as Senior Associate Director from 2022-2024, including spiritual development, fundraising, compliance, staff onboarding and long-range planning. He mentored and developed coaches within the athletic department and oversaw facility management and event scheduling. He also served as the representative for the athletic department on campus committees related to enrollment, retention, campus safety and student life.

From 2015-2024, he served as the Director of Men’s & Women’s Cross Country/Track and Field at Montreat, providing leadership for all aspects of the program – from recruitment (which grew from 15 to 80 athletes during his tenure) to program development, administration and fundraising. In his most recent role at Givens Communities, Lewkowicz has managed all fundraising initiatives and outreach endeavors for the organization, leading to several million in total giving for 2024, and a more than 40% increase in cash gifts.

“It is a privilege and honor to be named the next athletic director at Bethel University,” Lewkowicz says. “I would like to thank Vice President Shawn Holtgren and all of the amazing people who were a part of the search process. It became evident to me very quickly that Bethel was a special place with special people. I am excited to join in the important work being done there and to serve our coaches and staff by leading an athletic department that is Christ-centered, relationally driven and competitively excellent. I can’t wait to get started! Go Pilots!”

He is a two-time AAC Coach of Character award winner (2023, 2024), has received 11 Coach/Staff of the Year awards and his teams have achieved 10 team championships, among other accolades.

He will replace Tony Natali, who has served Bethel University for 26 years (six as athletic director) and is staying on as a consultant/advisor to aid the transition over the next school year.

“Jason will do an excellent job of continuing the core values that we’ve lived by the past several years of being a Christ-centered and student-athlete-focused athletic department. The legacy of Bethel Pilot athletics will continue to move forward under Jason’s leadership,” says Tony Natali, co-athletic director. “I look forward to working in the athletic department as a consultant/advisor during the coming year and helping Jason and Bethel in any way possible.”

Lewkowicz and his wife, Wendy, have been married for 23 years and have four sons. They look forward to being part of the Bethel community.

The Bethel University Board of Trustees is excited to announce the selection of Bethel’s ninth president, Dee McDonald, Ph.D., who will begin his tenure July 1. He will succeed Barbara K. Bellefeuille, Ed.D., who announced her retirement in December 2024. McDonald was unanimously confirmed by the Bethel University Board of Trustees and General Oversight Council of the Missionary Church, Bethel’s denominational affiliation.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. McDonald to Bethel University,” says Brian Habegger, Chairman of the Bethel University Board of Trustees. “He brings the skill set, vision, expertise and mission alignment Bethel needs for its next era as an institution. We are thankful to the Presidential Search Committee and FaithSearch Partners for their diligent work in our search.”

McDonald has 19 years of experience in Christian higher education and enrollment leadership, most recently as Vice President for Enrollment and Marketing at Crown College in St. Bonifacius, Minn. Rodney Arnold, President of the Missionary Church USA. “I’m honored to support him through this transition and look forward to the work ahead together.”

Growing up in LaPorte, Ind., McDonald learned about Bethel through Bible quizzing with his local Missionary Church.

“Bethel has always felt special to me – the mission, the people, the location, everything. There’s a reputation for being who you say you are, a humble disposition and hard-working culture. These elements give me an added appreciation for this special place called Bethel,” McDonald says.

In his first six months, he led a team that helped increase graduate recruitment nearly 50%, followed by 15% increases in enrollment annually thereafter. Longtime Bethel University Coach and Athletic Director Announces Retirement | Natali to Stay on as Consultant/Advisor

Bethel University Athletic Director Tony Natali announced today that he will retire from his full-time position August 1, 2025. He will stay on as a consultant/advisor to aid in the transition for the 2025-26 school year.

Natali has served Bethel University for 26 years and touched many lives as a coach (1998-2019), assistant athletic director (2011-2019) and athletic director (2019-2025).

“Tony Natali’s decades of coaching and mentoring have left an indelible mark on Bethel student-athletes,” says Shawn Holtgren, Ph.D., Vice President for Spiritual Life and University Affairs, who oversees Bethel’s athletic programs. “A highly successful coach and athletic director, Tony’s priority has always been to keep Christ at the center of Bethel athletics and to make students a priority. His legacy will be felt for decades to come.”

Natali came to Bethel in 1998 to develop the Track & Field program and serve as the head coach for the men’s and women’s teams, a role he held until he became Athletic Director in 2019. He also served as Men’s Basketball Assistant Coach from 1998-2017. During his tenure as coach, his teams achieved 15 NCCAA National Championships (13 Track & Field, two Men’s Basketball) and 14 Crossroads League Championships (10 Track & Field, four Men’s Basketball). He also received 12 NCCAA Track & Field Coaching Staff of the Year Awards and 11 Crossroads League Track & Field Coach of the Year Awards.

Other accolades include being inducted into the NCCAA Hall of fame (2018) and Dr. Albert J. Beutler Athletic Hall of Fame (Bethel, 2020). But behind his success was a vision to point student-athletes to Christ by serving as a pastor-coach.

During his tenure as Athletic Director, Bethel Pilot Athletics achieved 12 National Championships in the NCCAA and NAIA. He helped oversee the development of new athletic programs, including Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving, Men’s and Women’s Bowling, Esports and Men’s Volleyball, bringing 204 new students to Bethel.  He played a key role in securing Bethel as a host site for NAIA National Tournament play in Men’s Soccer, and Men’s Basketball, and hosting the NAIA Swimming & Diving National Championship. Natali also assisted in planning and fundraising for the Lehman Family Training Center, a track training facility, and oversaw the Wiekamp Center lobby and coaches hallway renovation projects.

In a statement, Natali said: “I’d like to start off by saying my 26 years at Bethel University were a special time for me and my family. I am so blessed to have gone through life with so many amazing administrators, leaders, supervisors, co-workers, coaches and athletes during this time. I would like to thank each and every person I’ve had the pleasure to come into contact with during these past years. While I am retiring from my Athletic Director position, I am excited that I will remain involved in the Bethel University Athletics Department as a consultant and advisor during this coming year. This will provide a great transition for the future of Bethel Pilot Athletics. I am excited for what God has planned for the future of Bethel University and myself. I can’t express the feeling of appreciation I have for Bethel and all the great memories. I am truly blessed in more ways than I could ever express. No regrets, just many thanks!”

Tony and his wife, Andrea, live in Mishawaka, Ind. They have two daughters: Cassie (Mitchell Horn) and Hannah (Alec Betz), three grandsons and one granddaughter.
