The Bethel University Choir has been selected to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City June 8 after being invited to audition by Manhattan Concert Productions. Last summer, the organization approached Bethel about participating in this year’s performance series, and the choir submitted a recording showcasing the ensemble’s musical excellence. Following the audition process, Bethel was officially accepted to perform. The group of 23 students, which is led by Dr. Stephen Martin, associate professor and chair of music & theatre, will perform “Illuminare” by acclaimed composer Elaine Hagenberg, a five-movement work based on ancient Latin, Greek and English texts that explores themes of darkness, hope, peace and light.

For Bethel students, the experience represents more than an opportunity to perform on one of the world’s most celebrated stages. Dr. Martin emphasizes that the choir’s mission is rooted in service and Christ-centered excellence.

“Performance is a part of what we do, but it’s always in a posture of serving,” Martin says.

Through opportunities like Carnegie Hall, students gain experience performing at a high level while representing Bethel University with professionalism, faith and artistry.

“University Choir teaches students how to pursue community and excellence at the same time,” says Martin, highlighting the impact choir has on students beyond musical performance.

In addition to performing at Carnegie Hall, students will experience the culture and history of New York City through excursions to Central Park, the 9/11 Memorial, the Museum of Modern Art, the Statue of Liberty and a Broadway performance during their stay (from June 4-9). Trips like this provide students with meaningful shared experiences that strengthen relationships, broaden perspectives and create lasting memories, demonstrating Bethel University’s commitment to holistic education both inside and outside the classroom.

Last summer, Bethel University’s choir tour took students to Hawaii. Read about the experience here.
