The Department of Art at Bethel University is pleased to announce Via Crucis, an exhibition by Assistant Professor of Art Chad Jay, on display in the Weaver Gallery from January 31 through April 5, 2025. This collection offers an exploration of the ‘Scriptural Stations of the Cross’ through a series of mixed-media paintings that blend theological inquiry with visual artistry.

Jay specializes in painting and drawing, with a focus on integrating faith and creative practice. In Via Crucis, he examines the ‘Scriptural Stations of the Cross’, a sequence of 15 pivotal moments in Christ’s Passion derived from Gospel accounts.

“My intention with Via Crucis is to present a contemplative reimagining of Christ’s Passion, where the compositions engage with the tension between chaos and redemption as the narrative progresses from Gethsemane to the Resurrection,” says Jay. “This series is designed to foster a deeper theological reflection through a visual journey that is both spiritually profound and artistically nuanced.”

The Weaver Gallery, located in the Everest-Rohrer Chapel/Fine Arts Center at Bethel University, is open to the public Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Admission is free.

This exhibition is supported by a Vital Worship Grant from Calvin University, reflecting a careful engagement with scriptural and theological frameworks. Additional events related to the grant include a student chapel on March 14 and a corporate worship service at St. Paul’s Memorial Church in South Bend, Ind., on April 11, where students and faculty will perform original poetry and songs. More information will be released closer to those events.
