Bethel University announces the establishment and first recipient of the Aloha Break Through Scholarship. This scholarship has been established by the Ayabe family through the estate of Dr. Harold Ayabe to encourage students from Hawaii to study and grow personally, spiritually and relationally at Bethel University. Bethel has strong ties to Hawaii, dating back generations. Two current trustees (Sharon Ayabe and William Gates) and one former trustee (Ruth Taba) are residents of Kauai. And Bethel has an extension studies program offering associate and bachelor’s degrees at Kalaheo Missionary Church.
The first recipient of the Aloha Break Through Scholarship is Joshua Martin, a graduate of Hawaii Technology Academy and member of Lihue Missionary Church, who will receive $10,000.
Martin has a strong enthusiasm for sharing his faith through his leadership in youth activities and participation in mission trips to Mexico, dedication to serving others and commitment to ministry. He is the son of Bethel graduates Pastor David ’05 and Amy Martin ’05 from the island of Kauai.
About the Scholarship
The Aloha Break Through Scholarship will provide three $5,000 scholarships awarded to the first student from Kauai, the Big Island, and Oahu to attend Bethel. An additional $5,000 is awarded to the very first recipient, Joshua Martin. The award can be used toward tuition, room and board, and recipients will be determined by the offices of Admission and Financial Aid at Bethel University.
The prospective recipient must be a first-time college student living on one of the three islands listed upon the time of application; they must also meet Bethel University’s admission criteria and be the first to deposit from their island. Preference will be given to Missionary Church and ministry major applicants.
